A Military Spouse's Thoughts on Working for Worldwide101

Last summer, MilSO Box paired up with the Virtual Assistant Agency Worldwide101 to provide information to the MilSO Box community on how they could join their team. Worldwide101 is not exclusive to military spouses, but actively recruits them because of their proven abilities. As a result of last summer's outreach, one of our community members, Alison, was hired! This is what Alison has to say about her experience so far...

1.) Why did you start seeking a flexible career?

As soon as my husband and I got married and I committed to life as a military spouse, I immediately began searching for flexible ways to take my career on the road! I found Worldwide and knew immediately I wanted to apply.

2.) What were your initial thoughts about applying for a position with Worldwide101?

I was really excited when I came across Worldwide101 because I love working with startups and entrepreneurs. To be able to do that remotely, seemed almost too good to be true! I was initially nervous to apply as I knew it was a highly competitive process. However, once I submitted my application and began the interview process I was continually impressed by how welcoming and supportive the whole Worldwide101 team was.

3.) What appealed to you most about applying for Worldwide101 as a military spouse?

Worldwide101 seemed like the perfect way to use my MBA education to support small-businesses and to continue to grow my professional skills from whatever post we ended up stationed at. I liked that you can choose the clients you work with, which meant I could dedicate my time to projects I was interested in. As a military spouse, I was really looking for a durable career that I could take base to base. I didn’t want to be back in the job search every year or two or worry about gaps in my resume. With all the uncertainties that come from being a MilSO, I liked that I would have the opportunity to build long term relationships with clients -- relationships that could potentially last longer than any one military post assignment.

4.) How has your journey been so far?

I learn something new everyday with this position. I appreciate the distinct challenges that each client brings and enjoy the variety of projects that I get to work on. It’s taken some time for me to adjust to balancing the needs of multiple clients and to learn how to step away from my computer or turn off my phone, but I’m getting there. :)

5.) Would you recommend Worldwide101 to other milspouses?

Definitely! The work is rewarding and flexible. You can structure your schedule to ensure that you still have time for other things that are important to you. I really value the work-life balance that Worldwide101 offers. Working from home with Worldwide101 has allowed me to feel like I am still contributing and growing as an individual, while also being able to flex around my partners’ uncertain schedule.

6.) What advice do you have for other military spouses looking for flexible positions?

Utilize military spouse education grants (MyCAA, DEA, IVMF programs) to fund certifications that build skill sets (project management, social media management, design, teaching) and make you more marketable for flexible opportunities. Join your local InGear Career for Military Spouses Virtual Chapter on Facebook which will provide daily inspiration and leads on virtual positions. Finding a flexible position that allows you to work remotely, and on a schedule that works for your family is possible, so find an opportunity you’re interested in and go for it! And of course, pamper yourself with a MilSO Box for all your hard work - You deserve it!!
